As you research home care for a Veteran, you’ll run into two very different ways to pay for it: VA-authorized care and private-pay care. Understanding the difference helps you avoid paying out of pocket for services the VA might cover — and helps you plan if the VA route isn’t available. Here’s a clear comparison.
What is VA-authorized home care?
VA-authorized home care is in-home support that the VA arranges and pays for on behalf of an eligible Veteran. After enrollment and a clinical assessment, the VA authorizes a set number of care hours, and a community agency delivers that care. The Veteran and family typically have little to no direct cost for the authorized services, because the VA funds them.
The trade-off is that VA-authorized care follows the VA’s process: enrollment, assessment, authorization, and defined hours. It’s well worth it for eligible Veterans, but it does require navigating those steps.
What is private-pay home care?
Private-pay home care is exactly what it sounds like — care that the family arranges and pays for directly, without going through the VA. Its advantage is flexibility and speed: you can start quickly, choose any number of hours, and adjust freely without waiting on authorizations. The downside is cost, since you’re paying out of pocket.
Some families use private-pay care as a bridge — starting care immediately while the VA process is still underway — then transitioning to VA-authorized hours once approved.
How to know which applies to your Veteran
The right answer depends on eligibility and timing:
- If the Veteran is enrolled in VA health care and has a clinical need, VA-authorized care is usually the first path to explore — it can cover the cost.
- If care is needed immediately and authorization is still in process, private pay can bridge the gap.
- If the Veteran doesn’t qualify for VA-funded hours, private pay (sometimes combined with benefits like Aid & Attendance) may be the route.
You don’t have to guess which applies. A VA-experienced agency can quickly help you understand your options so you don’t leave benefits on the table — or wait longer than necessary for care to begin.
Why the agency should handle both well
Ideally, you want an agency that is fluent in the VA process and can also start private-pay care when speed matters. That flexibility means your loved one gets help without an artificial delay while paperwork catches up. Zeabe serves Veterans across Dover and Kent County, Delaware and understands both pathways, so we can guide you toward whatever gets dependable care started fastest and most affordably. We’re licensed by the state as a Delaware Home Health Agency – Aides Only (License HHAAO-065A).
